Martin Hans Birkhäuser was head of the department for gynecological endocrinology and reproductive medicine at the University Women’s Clinic Bern, Inselspital, Bern, Switzerland.He completed a dissertation in 1970 at the University of Basel and then specialized in the fields of endocrinology (internal medicine) and then gynecological endocrinology and reproductive medicine. His particular areas of interest are menopause, particularly osteoporosis and postmenopausal cardiovascular risk, HRT, and menopause and quality of life. In 1987 he received the Schering Prize for his research work on polycystic ovary syndrome (“clinical and pathophysiological aspects of new forms of therapy in chronic clomiphene-resistant anovulation in the context of PCO-S”).Martin Hans Birkhäuser is Honorary Founding President of the European Menopause and Andropause Society and Honorary Member of the Menopause Societies of Portugal, Romania, Hungary, Chile and Turkey (Honorary President). From 2003-2008 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Menopause Society (IMS), from 2005-2008 as Treasurer.Since 2004 he has been the founding president of the Swiss working group for gynecological endocrinology and reproductive medicine. In this function he is a member of the Advisory Board of Switzerland. Society for Gynecology and Obstetrics.He has been President of Switzerland since 2007. Association Against Osteoporosis.
